Smartlinjen

The telephone made accessible: Danish speech becomes text in real time, and text becomes a natural voice.

Background

Jobs, healthcare, banking, and everyday life still run on phone calls, and for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, the telephone is a wall. Texts get ignored, interpreter bookings take days, and around 800,000 Danes have reduced hearing. No solution today makes Danish phone calls accessible.

Smartlinjen is an internal product at AStyltsvig Consulting, built to change that.

The idea

A phone that speaks text: everything the caller says appears on screen in real time, and the user’s written replies are read aloud in a natural Danish voice the user has chosen. A personal intro tells the caller what is happening, so the conversation feels normal at both ends.

The solution

Own technology built for Danish from the first line: live transcription with under 2 seconds of latency, natural Danish speech synthesis with voice selection, and AI quick replies continuously suggesting three short answers so the conversation keeps its rhythm. On top of that come push notifications on iPhone and Android, a transcribed voicemail, and searchable history.

Accessibility and privacy are foundational: every state is communicated with colour, icon, and text at once (WCAG AA), no human interpreters listen in, raw audio is never stored, and transcripts live in the EU with one-click deletion.

Status

The prototype completes real calls today, inbound and outbound, with live transcription, speech synthesis, AI quick replies, a personal dictionary, and a GDPR-ready data model. The next steps are using your own number via call forwarding, and pilot runs with the first daily users. The vision is an accessible phone number for every deaf and hard-of-hearing person in Denmark.
